  The funeral directors at Ithaca Cremation Service will notify Social Security of your loved ones passing with a specialized form.  There is a small, one time death benefit payout to a surviving spouse. Again, our staff at ICS will take care of this for you.  If the deceased's social security payment gets deposited in their account after death, leave the account open for SS to retrieve their funds. They may process the death status after the payment has already been distributed. If the deceased was receiving benefits from their office, depending on the legal family status at the time of your loved one’s passing, you may be eligible for additional benefits. You can apply by telephone to the Social Security Administration; and if needed, they will arrange an appointment at the local office:
