Ward Hungerford

Obituary of Ward Addison Hungerford

Please share a memory of Ward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
After an incredibly brave battle with Parkinson’s disease and pancreatic cancer, Ward A. Hungerford passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on October 14, 2021 at the age of 76. Ward served in the United States Army from 1962-66 and in the United States Army Reserves from 1982-2004. He studied Civil Engineering Technology at Alfred State University, graduating in 1969. He then went on to work at the Tompkins County Highway Department for over 30 years, retiring as Highway Manager. Ward was also very active in the Masonic Lodge and Newfield Boy Scouts Troop 34. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Edna and Jasper Hungerford and his brother, Stan Hungerford. Ward is survived by his wife, Carol Pirozzolo Hungerford; two children Joseph (Maria) Hungerford and Jessica (Ziad) Kobty; eight grandchildren: Cora, Katherine, Ana, Amelia, Anthony, Zain, Maya and Sami; sisters Diann Van de Bogart, Joan (John) Schatz; and brother James Hungerford. He is also survived by cousins, nieces, nephews as well as many other relatives and friends. Ward loved fishing, home renovation (there was nothing he couldn’t fix!), working in his yard and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was always willing to help others and could always make you laugh with his dry sense of humor and quick wit. He will be incredibly missed by family and friends and remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and brother-in-law. His legacy will continue. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, American Cancer Society or Wounded Warrior Project. Calling hours are scheduled from 2-4pm, Sunday, October 31, 2021 at Herson-Wagner Funeral Home at 110 S. Geneva St, Ithaca, NY 14850. A Memorial Service will immediately follow, beginning at 4pm.
