Jean Shu-Tsu Hsu 77, of Ithaca, New York, passed away on April 21, 2022 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira, NY and to be embraced in the arms of Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior.
Jean was born on November 30, 1944 in Taipei, Taiwan, the first grandchild of her grandfather, Rev. Chun-Shen Hsu, and the first child of Rev. Chian-Hsin and Chai-Wei Hsu. Shu-Tsu, Jean’s Taiwanese given name, means to wait for the Lord’s arrival. Jean is survived by two sisters Margaret Wong and Chun-Hui Tu, two brothers Kwang-Chan and Mark, one brother-in-law Jung-Chuan Tu, two sisters-in-law Chi-Yu and Hsueh-Meei , two nephews Bradford Wong and Lien Tu, three nieces Katie Chih-Wei Hsu, Chu-Yin Hsu, and Li-Hsin Tu.
Jean was talented and gifted since her childhood. She received countless academic awards and honors throughout her school years from elementary school to National Taiwan University(NTU). She was raised in a Christian family, attending Sunday school and service every week. In 1968 she was baptized at the Taipei Chi-nan Presbyterian Church and was confirmed there in 1968.
Upon graduation from the NTU, Taiwan, Jean worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Department of Public Health, Medical College, National Taiwan University. In 1968, awarded with full scholarship, Jean attended the Department of Biochemistry, Cornell University to pursue her graduate studies. After receiving her Master of Science degree, Jean worked at Cornell’s Division of Nutritional Sciences within the College of Human Ecology for 30 years, and retired in 2001.
Jean joined the First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca in 1970 at the age of 26. She has served the church there as a Sunday School teacher and nursery aide, and has served several terms as Deacon. She leaves many dear friends, whom she loved and who loved her.
Jean's faithfulness and dedication are legendary. In her stronger years, she walked to church every Sunday with bags of brightly-colored hard-boiled eggs. "Every Sunday is Easter!" she reminded us, as her Grandfather had always taught her. Many children of the church still remember being sent home with eggs for the week!
In memory of Jean, her memorial service will take place at The First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca, NY (315 N Cayuga St, Ithaca, NY 14850. (607) 272-2800) on Saturday, June 11, 2022. Service will begin at 11:00 am.
