Warm memories of a mom that taught me so much. I am blessed everyday to call you my mom, and not a moment passes that I don't think about something that you taught me. Love you mom!

I just discovered this page and would like to share some memories and photos of my dearly loved, most precious sister.
Most vividly, I remember and treasure Joan's and my play in our very early years, when we would “fight” over who would have Shirley, our youngest sister, as a playmate. I think we often nearly stretched her apart, Joan taking one arm and I, the other, pulling her in opposite directions. We just loved our baby sister, Shirley, so much and each wanted her all to ourselves.
Here are some photos of Joan—or “Joanie Baloney” as our father would say: a) an early portrait of a very young Joan taken by mummy (a gifted photographer as well as artist), b) Joan as a young child in mummy's little wicker chair from Scotland; c) the three of us playing together; d) the three of us decorating Easter eggs under mummy’s guidance; e) and f) the three now grown sisters’ family reunion with our parents; g) several of the grandchildren playing on the lawn at Grove Park; and h) Joan as I will always remember her: beautiful, effervescent, brilliant… the most popular "sought-after" girl, wherever she went.
When Joan and I were at McGill together, beginning to live our dreams, I remember Joan’s musical talent, her lovely singling voice, her clever illustrations, and how she always listened to her Glenn Gould’s Brandenburg Concertos vinyl records while organizing her room in residence. I also remember her brilliant essays and, the ease with which she acquired her undergrad degree followed by her Masters in Library Science.
All so long ago now...
Perhaps because Joan was a middle child, she took special pride in “being first” when that was possible. She was the first in our family to get married. She was the first to have a child, thus giving the first grandchild to our parents. And—even though it sounds strange—she was also the first of us three sisters to die. I know that if/when we get to Heaven, she will say, “See Karen? Isn’t it just so great? And I was the first of us to arrive: the first!”
I remember Joan’s joie de vivre, her excitement at life in general, her smoking cigarettes, which I thought was the height of sophistication, and most of all, our chatter at the end of each day after classes, always punctuated by laughing fits, “so hard it hurt”--magical memories that live forever in my heart. In the words of my dear friend, Tetiana, who knew her then: “In my memory, Joan will always live as a spark plug: bright, bold, oozing intelligence and more than a bit of defiance. She was very beautiful, had a great figure and was ready to take life on by the horns.”
Despite the fact that Joan had a challenging life, she lived it fully and with grace. Joan and Bob--as I remember them--were a dedicated team, a great couple who were married for 46 years and had six talented, wonderful children (Daniel RIP), each of whom they loved beyond measure.
Joan was a very special person who strengthened our resolve, enriched our lives, brought us much laughter and joy, and left us all too quickly. She was "one in a million billion", as is each of us perhaps: ephemeral, yet indispensable and irreplaceable.
