Obituary of Dorothy Lou Monnoyer Jordan
Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy Monnoyer Jordan, 91, passed away on November 18, 2016 in Ithaca, N.Y. surrounded by her loving family.
Dorothy was a life-long, proud Syracusan. She was born in Syracuse, N.Y. to Hiram and Frances Monnoyer on April 10, 1925. She graduated from Goodyear Burlingame School and Syracuse University earning a Masters Degree in Social Studies. She taught at North Syracuse High School from 1948-1950.
She married William Carl Jordan on October 28, 1950 and together they raised three sons. She was devoted to her family. They lived and thrived on Peck Hill Road in Jamesville, N.Y. for 52 years. Her husband Bill died in 2003. She is survived by sons Bill (Connie), Andy (Margaret), Tom (Rebekah) and grandsons Jeb and Chris.
Dorothy was a woman of deep faith. She and Bill were active members of DeWitt Community Church for over 50 years where she was involved in many groups, taught Sunday School and led the Adult Bible Study for over 40 years. She was the Post-Standard Woman of Achievement in religion in 1979. Service to others and life-long learning were very important to Dorothy and were reflected in her active involvement in many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Junior League, PEO, Portfolio, and Alpha Phi. She and Bill were enthusiastic readers and founding members of a Great Books group that they were active in for 50 years.
Dorothy was also noted for her love of chocolate. She loved baking chocolate chip cookies and brownies (the “chocolatiest” ever made) for her friends and family!
She lived in Jamesville until the last 4 years of her life, when she moved to The Bridges in Ithaca, N.Y. to be near family. One of the challenges in leaving the Syracuse area was missing her dear friends, many of whom were life-long. Despite declining health, she was able to maintain her wit, good humor, and kind heart, developing close relationships with the caring Bridges staff. The family is deeply grateful for the loving care she received while there.
In addition to her sons and grandsons, Dorothy is survived by her brother- and sister-in-law Charles and Barbara Jordan, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Elliot Mayo.
A memorial service will be held at Dewitt Community Church, DeWitt, N.Y. on Saturday, December 3 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception at the church to follow. Private graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to DeWitt Community Church, 3600 Erie Blvd. East, DeWitt, N.Y. 13214 or Meals on Wheels of Syracuse, 300 Burt St, Syracuse, NY 13202.
